Meet Shirley and Mala, two amazing women from Vanuatu who are working hard to build the resilience of vulnerable communities to climate change. They’re coming to Brisbane soon, and we’d like to invite you to meet them at a very special event.

About the speakers

Mala Silas is a Ni-Vanuatu woman from the island of Tanna and a program officer with CARE. She is supporting the people of Futuna, a small island in the far south east of Vanuatu, with building food and nutritional security in the face of climate change. The program has involved trialling new crops and agricultural techniques, drawing on both traditional and scientific knowledge, and building on the unique strengths of this remote island community. Mala was a member of Vanuatu’s delegation to the UN Climate Summit in Warsaw in 2013.

Shirley Laban is a Ni-Vanuatu woman from the island of Nguna, north of Efate. She is the manager of Oxfam’s climate change program in Vanuatu. As coordinator of the Vanuatu Climate Action Network, Shirley helps NGOs and community organisations from across the islands work together in building resilience to climate change and advocating for stronger action and support from the international community. Shirley was a member of Vanuatu’s delegation to the UN Climate Summit in Warsaw in 2013 and recently took on the role of coordinating the Pacific Islands Climate Action Network.
